Past concerts
From its first concert in July 1997 to date, Cantique had given over 70 concerts which raised over £40,000 for charities and other good causes. Here are some details of some of our concerts.

Village Carols by Candlelight
Sunday 26th February 2023, St Mary, Bentworth
Choral Evensong 4pm
Cantique sang a late afternoon service of choral evensong at the beautiful Bentworth village church of St Mary. Mostly unaccompanied music of the Tudor period, including music by Richard Farrant, Thomas Caustun and Adrian Batten.
Saturday 25th February 2023, St Mary the Virgin, Frensham
Richard Potter Tribute
A joyous celebration of Richard Potter's life. Richard was one of the founders of Cantique. St Mary's Choir, Cantiique and Shuffletunes all sang some of Richard's favourite pieces seperately and then came together to sing the traditional New Zealand shanty "The Wellerman".
Saturday 17th December 2022, All Saints, Tilford
Village Carols by Candlelight
A programme of carols and readings for Christmas sung by candlelight in the lovely re-decorated Victorian church of All Saints at Tilford. The concert included a flute and piano interlude by Veronica Austin and Alison Wrigley.
Sunday 16th October 2022, All Saints, Headley
Songs of Autumn and the Sea
An early evening Sunday concert to raise funds for All Saints church, Headley. Cantique entertained an appreciative audience with varied programme of music including the Three Sea Songs (Home Sweet Home, Arethusa and Tom Bowling) by Jennette Wickes and , of course Joseph Kosma's Autumn Leaves.
23rd July 2022, Holy Cross Church, Binsted
A Mid Summer Night's Music
A return visit, by Cantique to Binsted church during extensive repair work following storm damage. Cantique entertained a large, appreciative audience with an eclectic programme of music genres and humorous readings.. The concert raised over £2000 for the Church's fundraising appeal for repair to the stained glass Victorian East window
28th May 2022, St Mary's Church, Froyle
Spring into Summer
A return visit, by Cantique to Froyle church following its closure for four months for re-wiring and an internal repaint. Cantique entertained a large, appreciative audience with an eclectic programme of music genres and humorous readings. The concert finished with the mediaeval round "Sumer is icumen in". Richard, our conductor, even managed to get the audience to join in, splitting the ladies and the gentlemen. The concert raised over £1100 for the Church's fundraising appeal.
12th March 2022, St Andrew's Church, Farnham
Song from the Shows
A Saturday morning "Cafe" concert in aid of All Saints, Tilford "Save Our Church" campaign.
Alison Wrigley's Wholenotes Choirs joined with Cantique Chamber Choir to perform a wide selection of show songs.
The concert was introduced by Revd. Neil Fairlamb, from All Saints, Tilford and the concert opened with a prayer for Ukraine and Cantique singing a Ukranian Lullaby.
To close the concert, the Wholenotes Choir and Cantique joined forces to sing "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables.

Happy Birthday Jane
A concert to celebrating Jane Austen's 244th birthday with a selection of music from her lifetime and beyond. We included a whimsical piece; a rhyme about making a Christmas Pudding written by Cassandra Austen, Jane's mother, for her friend Martha Lloyd, which was set to music for us by John Broom.

6th January 2018, Selborne
Music for Epiphany
On Twelfth Night we made a return visit to St. Mary's Church, Selborne where we entertained a large audience with seasonal music, some more jazzy things and the famous Cantique pantomime (Cinderella). The concert raised £700 for the Church's appeal to allow it to install a new sound system.

Concert in aid of the upkeep, repair and refurbishment of the church tower and clock.
30th September 2017, Frensham
Anniversary Concert
We celebrated our 20th anniversary in style. Bob Warren and Richard Potter founded our choir and the concert included a performance of the first piece sung by the then "Dockenfield Onslaught" in 1997, Arthur Sullivan's poignant part song The Long Day Closes. Richard joined the tenor section for the concert. We also enjoyed Gareth Giles magnificent solo performance of I Got Rhythm and The Windmills of your Mind. John Gardner's centenary was also marked by an exuberant performance of Fight the Good Fight.

On 26th November 2016 we took part in a spectacular performance of Verdi's Requiem with the Holybourne Singers at St Thomas on the Bourne.
We are looking forward to future collaboration between the choirs...

"Shakespeare on Music" by Chris Gardner
9th October 2016, Alton Maltings
A concert of beautiful music to raise money for McMillan Cancer. We were joined by Gareth Giles on piano and a number of instrumentalists. Our contribution included Chris Gardner's Shakespeare on Music, Will Todd's glorious arrangement of Amazing Grace, and a selection of songs from My Fair Lady.
Around £700 was raised for McMillan.
14th May 2016, St. Lawrence, Weston Patrick
This concert marked the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death with a programme of music from his time and music written in the 20th Century. We gave the World premiere of Chris Gardner's Shakespeare on Music in which we were accompanied by the wonderful Gareth Giles. The setting was idyllic, the weather perfect and our hosts put on a wonderful reception after the concert
13th December 2015, All Saints Church, Headley
Our concert in Headley told the story of how Christmas music evolved from the 16th to the 21st Century and included two world premieres; Jane Palmer's Dormi, Jesu! and Jennette Wickes's Lullay Lulla. They were joined by Aly Paterson's Puer Nobis Nascitur to make a remarkable section sequence in which we had the three composers taking their bows. We also showed how many favourite carols originated in the middle ages as dance tunes. We were raising money for the renovation of the electrical system in All Saints Church.
3rd October 2015 at St. Joan of Arc Church, Farnham
A concert of sacred music from the 19th and 20th Century which we dedicated to our co-founder Bob Warren. Highlights included the premiere of John Broom's intriguing choral arrangement of Rachmaninoff's C# minor prelude and four of John Gardner's lovely "Six American Hymns in a Free Style". We were joined by Mike Smith on organ, and he did an immaculate job accompanying and playing solos. Despite clashing with a crucial World Cup rugby match, the concert resulted in a significant donation being made to The Fountain Centre.
9th May 2015, St Luke's Church, Milland
"From the Sublime to the Ridiculous"
A full and most appreciative house in this gorgeous Victorian Church, with stunning canapes served in the interval. Raising money for the Church to have a new sound system. First performances of the choir's own arrangements of Cole Porter songs from High Society as well as John Broom's unique and scurrilous take on some great romantic piano concertos and the relationship between Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Also a brief lesson on the development of written music from the 13th Century to the Baroque.

- "For the Fallen"
H. Rex Freston 1891-1916
Performed with actors from Alton Fringe Theatre, our concert 'For the Fallen' commemorated the outbreak of World War 1 with words and music. Our men's rendition of a hitherto unknown verse of Long Way To Tipperary brightened a reflective evening, while Chris's setting of Rex Freston's poems delighted and the ending - Elgar's 'Lux Aeterna' - sent shivers down the spine.
H. Rex Freston, died in France after only six weeks, January 24th, 1916, age 25.
"This poet is a soldier now. My lords, I fear he's gone to sleep."
20th September 2014, - Four Marks
Sounds Old, New and Local
We joined forces with other local performers for a fascinating programme which included works by the late Martin Read (Three Songs from As you like it and On the steps of the Buttercross), and the first performance of Chris Gardner's Somewhere in France... This work commemorates the centenary of the outbreak of World War I, using words by H. Rex Freston, a poet who lasted only a few weeks at the front
17th May 2014, All Saints', Headley
Music included new arrangements by John Broom of the rock 'n' roll hits You're Sixteen (tempo marked "big and bouncy") and King Creole.
21st December 2013, St Lawrence, Alton
We joined forces with the St. Lawrence Covenant Youth Choir. The home-grown music included the first performance of Chris Gardner's setting of the Norfolk Carol Come let us all with heart and voice. We also performed John Broom's atmospheric arrangement of The Carol of the Drum, Jennette Wickes's wonderful Adam Lay Y-Bounden and Aly Paterson's elegant Puer nobis nascitur.
16th November 2013 - Wrecclesham
This concert included one of our favourite pieces of all, Ward Swingle's setting of Tony Isaac's fervent prayer for the future of the World, Give us this day.
We also performed a "potted version" of Bach's Jesu, Meine Freude.
12th October 2013 , Upper Froyle
Cantique were at St. Mary's Church in Upper Froyle where we premiered John Broom's arrangement of the rock 'n' roll hit You're Sixteen, and four of Finzi's challenging Seven Songs.
